A product of a successful racing family, Steph was a passionate equestrian rider and balanced schooling and riding during the early days of her apprenticeship.
She left school during her final year to follow the lure of a professional career in racing and has not looked back.
Steph relocated to Queensland in 2019, leaving her partner, family and friends to maximise her opportunities as her apprenticeship was drawing to a close.
Since arriving in Queensland Steph has outridden her apprentice claim (a highly coveted goal of all apprentice jockeys) and commenced life as a senior rider.
Thornton showcased her talent a the Gold Coast Magic Millions, finishing fourth in the 2-year-old Classic as part of an all-female team before winning the last race of the day to round out a successful weekend of racing.
Steph is an elite and highly professional rider and a willing ambassador for the racing industry.
